Pizza Night!

PizzaI LOVE pizza! I love making it, too. My husband and I like to buy pre-made pizza dough from Trader Joe’s. Given that I’ve made pizza dough from scratch and completely failed, starting with pre-made dough puts you a level above going with Boboli without risking a false start.

We use marinara or pizza sauce (also available from Trader Joe’s, in a jar) when we’re in a rush, but if you’ve got more time, you can make your own tomato sauce.

The fun for us comes in the toppings (and, of course, the eating)!. For our most recent pizza night, we fried up some Italian sausage, chopped up fresh tomatoes and red bell peppers and topped everything off with shredded mozzarella cheese (also bought from Trader Joe’s).

My husband floured a large cutting board and rolled out our pizza dough (we went with wheat dough to be slightly healthier and because we like the sweetness of the dough), placed the dough on a baking sheet, and popped the dough into a 425 degree Fahrenheit oven to pre-bake for 5 minutes. Once the dough was starting to brown, he took it out of the oven, spread about a cup of marinara sauce over it and sprinkled the toppings all over. He popped the pizza back into oven and baked for 15-20 minutes.

We like to pre-bake our crust because it ensures that the dough is cooked without over doing the rest. Because we fried up the sausage, we really only need the cheese to melt and brown for the pizza to be ready.

I love pizza night because you can get as adventurous as you want and include exactly those ingredients that you love. For example, I really enjoy making a sauce-less yellow curry chicken pizza with lots of onion, bell peppers and curry powder. What do you make for pizza night?
